Youth killed, 10 cops among 22 injured in Anantnag clashes

ANANTNAG: A youth was killed and twenty-two persons, including 10 cops, were injured during clashes in Anantnag town of south Kashmir on Saturday.

Reports said that youth took to streets and staged protests soon after Eid prayers concluded at Eidgah Hanfia and Ahli Hadees.

They said that the protesting youth pelted the forces deployed in the area with stones. The forces responded by firing tear gas and pellets, triggering further clashes.

At least twelve youth were injured in the forces’ action, they said, adding that all the injured were shifted to district hospital Anantnag for treatment.

One among the injured, identified as Sheeraz Ahmad Naikoo of Brakpora succumbed at the hospital. Two youth hit by pellets in their eyes were referred to Srinagar for specialised treatment.

Medical Superintendent district hospital Anantnag Dr Majid Mehrab said the deceased had suffered pellet injuries in his throat and head.

At least ten policemen were injured during the clashes. Ten policemen injured during the clashes were identified as Aijaz Ahmad ( No . 1275 A) Mohammad Ashraf ( No. 568 ) resident of Shangus, Bilal Ahmad (DPL, Anantnag ) R/O Kulgam, Aaqib Shafi (No. 1067 A ) Altaf Hussain ( No. 1020 A ) Haroon Mir ( No.1353 A ) Irshad Iqbal Khan ( No. 983 A), JP Singh son of Herpal Singh and Mohammad Afzal.
