SRINAGAR: A two-day shutdown began across Kashmir valley on Wednesday in support of Article 35-A which has been challenged in Supreme Court of India.

All shops and other business establishments remained closed while a thin movement of traffic was witnessed across the valley.

The shutdown call was issued by Joint Resistance Leadership comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik.

The JRL had urged the people observe shutdown today and tomorrow to protest and resist any move to change demographic nature of Jammu and Kashmir by scrapping hereditary state subject law guaranteed under Article 35-A of Indian Constitution.

Article 35-A, which was incorporated in the Constitution by a 1954 Presidential Order, accords special rights and privileges to the citizens of J&K.

Several interlocutory petitions have also been filed in support and against of Article 35-A by various individuals and civil society groups.
