Shutdown in south Kashmir’s Shopian; Internet remains suspended

SRINAGAR: A shutdown is being observed in Shopian district of south Kashmir on Monday to protest against the killing of Al Badr commander Zeenat ul Islam and his aide in a gunfight with the forces.

All shops and other commercial establishments are closed in the district while transport is off the roads.

Islam and his aide Shakeel Ahmad were shot dead by the forces in a brief shootout in Yaripora area of the neighbouring Kulgam district on Saturday evening.

Tens of thousands of people participated in the funeral prayers of Islam and Ahmad on Sunday at their native villages of Sugan and Chillipora respectively.

Meanwhile, Internet continues to remain suspended in Shopian district on third straight day. The service was suspended soon after the news of Islam’s killing started doing the rounds on Saturday evening.
