Mumbai: A 34-year-old woman, who was raped and brutalised with a rod by a man inside a stationary tempo in the suburban Sakinaka area, died in a hospital during treatment this morning.

Nirbhaya-like Case:

  • 34-year-old victim assaulted with a rod and stabbed
  • Accused arrested within hours and charged with murder
  • The incident bears chilling similarity to 2012 Nirbhaya case

The crime, which bore a chilling similarity to the 2012 “Nirbhaya” gang-rape case of Delhi, took place in the wee hours on Friday. The suspect, Mohan Chouhan (45), who was arrested within a few hours of the incident, has now been charged with murder. While the city police formed a special investigation team to probe the incident, the BJP demanded capital punishment for the accused and questioned if women were safe in Maharashtra.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray termed the incident as a blot on humanity. “The trial in the case will be fast tracked and the victim will get justice,” he said in a statement.

According to the police, Mohan Chouhan worked as a driver and lived on the pavement in the same area.

Demanding capital punishment for the accused, Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Devendra Fadnavis said the CM should meet the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court and request him to hold the trial in a fast-track court.
