New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday took veiled swipes at the Opposition for politicisation of human rights, saying selective interpretation of rights was dangerous for democracy and was denting the country’s image. “Of late, some persons have started viewing human rights from the prism of politics,” he said at the 28th foundation day programme of the National Human Rights Commission via video-conferencing.

“Over the past few years, it has been seen that selective definition of human rights is guided by the vested interests of certain people. A particular incident in one location is construed as a violation of human rights, but the same incident at another location is not seen in the same light,” the PM said, noting that “such selective approach and interpretation of human rights is damaging for democracy”.

He further said human rights were infringed the most when people had political gains and losses in mind.

Modi was speaking for the first time since the October 3 violence in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri.
