SRINAGAR: Kashmiri language students on Thursday staged a protest sit-in at the Residency Road in Srinagar to demand implementation of a government order to make Kashmiri a compulsory subject in schools.

Scores of protesters, including graduates, post graduates and research scholars, assembled at Press Enclave under the banner of Kashmiri Language Union (KLU) to demand the implementation of government order to make the Kashmir language compulsory in schools and higher secondary schools.

“Last year, the government issued an order to make Kashmiri language compulsory in schools and Hr Sec but despite our continuous representations nothing has been done. It is an onslaught on our future as well as the Kashmiri language which is our identity”, said Sofi Hilal, General secretary of KLU.

The protesters said that thousands of students, including PhD scholars, would get jobs if the subject is made compulsory in the schools.

The union members threatened to intensify protests if their demands were not fulfilled at the earliest.
