KU organises intra-department road race

SRINAGAR: To prioritise sports and physical activities as essential components of student life, promoting fitness, teamwork and excellence across campuses, the Directorate of Physical Education and Sports (DPES), University of Kashmir (KU), inaugurated the ‘Intra-Department Road Race’ on Wednesday, featuring competitive races for both men and women, here at the main campus.

A total of 87 students from various departments participated, including 50 boys and 37 girls representing different departments and satellite campuses, an official spokesperson said in a statement issued here, adding that such activities are a regular feature of the Directorate.

On the occasion, KU Registrar, Prof Naseer Iqbal, motivated the students to engage actively in all sports activities. He commended the Directorate for organising such a significant event underlining its importance for student growth and development.

“Events like these not only encourage a spirit of healthy competition but also contribute to the overall well-being of our students,” Prof Naseer said.

Director, DPES, Dr Mandeep Singh, felicitated the medallists in both the men’s and women’s categories. He highlighted the role of sports in achieving excellence and bringing recognition to the university and the state.

“Participation in sports activities is crucial for the holistic development of our youth who can bring laurels to our institution,” Dr Singh said.

In the men’s category, Mir Riyaz from the Department of Mathematics won the Gold Medal, Amir Saleem from the School of Law secured the Silver Medal while as, Abid Amin Khan, pursuing MPEd course at the DPES, took home the Bronze Medal.

In the women’s category, Inayat Farooq, pursuing MPEd course at the DPES and Hurmah Shah from the School of Law clinched Gold Medals. Sumy Jan and Iqra Bano, both pursuing MPEd course at the DPES, secured the Silver and Bronze medals, respectively.

Azad Shah, Athletics Coach from the Department of Youth Services and Sports, J&K, served as the external expert for the event, the statement read.
