SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Friday foiled an Ashura procession by detaining scores of Shia mourners in Lal Chowk area of Srinagar.

An eyewitness said scores of Shia mourners managed to reach the city centre despite strict restrictions put in place by authorities to foil any march.

The mourners were led by senior Hurriyat Conference (G) leader Nissar Hussain Rather. Nissar along with other mourners was detained by police near Badshah Chowk, Lal Chowk.

Earlier, authorities imposed restrictions in parts of the Srinagar city to prevent the 10th Muharram procession.

The restrictions were imposed in Rainawari, Nowhatta, Khanyar, M.R.Gunj and Safa Kadal in the old city area while partial restrictions were put in the uptown Kothibagh area.

Since 1989, authorities have not allowed the 8th and 10th Muharram procession here due to security reasons.

Shia Muslims carry out mourning processions on the 10th day of the Muharram to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
