JAMMU: A 40-year old man from Poonch district of J&K, Friday became the first victim of Black Fuguns as he breathed his last at GMC Jammu, officials said.

Principal GMC Jammu Dr Shashi Sudan told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), that a person, who was suffering from Black Fungus, lost his battle with life at GMC Jammu, this afternoon.

She said that the patient was admitted on May 19 and Mucormycosis in him was detected on Thursday. “The patient had recovered from Covid-19 recently and was now suffering from uncontrolled diabetes,” Dr Sudan said.

She added that patient had contracted the disease due to the long-term use of steroid drugs.

Mucormycosis is a very rare and deadly disease which has mortality rate of 50 to 80 percent.

Pertinently, Black Fungus had made its entry into J&K last year after which at least six people were affected by it of which three died while three others survived.
