IUST organizes lecture on Islam and Modern science

AWANTIPORA: The Department of Islamic Studies, IUST organized a special lecture by Prof. Colin Turner, Founder and Head of Academic Research, International Foundation for Muslim Theology, UK on the topic ‘Islam and Modern Science’, as a part of their Online Lecture Series.

The lecture was presided by Prof. Iqtidar Mohd. Khan, Head, Department of Islamic Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi.

Prof. Turner, a globally reputed scholar of Islamic Studies and one of the leading exponents of the thought of Badiuzzaman Said Nursi deliberated on different aspects of the topic “Islam and Modern Science.” He opined that embracing and valuing the differences is critical for celebrating diversity, and developing harmony.  He emphasized on the urgent need of differentiating science proper, scientism, pseudo-science and missionization.

On this occasion, Prof. Manzoor Ahmad Malik, Dean Academic Affairs, IUST, spoke on the rise and fall of scientific and technological knowledge in the Muslim world, and Prof. Iqtidar Khan complimented the department for inviting international experts for interaction of the students and scholars. Introducing the session and the speaker, Dr. Afroz Ahamd Bisati (Head, Department of Islamic Studies, IUST) spoke about the online lecture series initiated by the department since 2021.  Prof. Manzoor Ahmad Bhat, Professor, Department of Islamic Studies, also spoke on this occasion. 

The session was moderated by Gowhar Quadir Wani, and Dr. Showkat Hussain, presented the vote of thanks. The lecture was attended by faculty Members, research Scholars and students from IUST and other national and international institutions.
