International Forest Day celebrated at Khanabal Anantnag

ANANTNAG: Additional Deputy Commissioner, Anantnag, Gh Hassan Sheikh presided over a function  organized by Social Forestry Department, at Dak Bungalow to mark the International Forest Day.

Speaking on the occasion, Sheikh said that there has been an extensive global discourse on the necessity of promoting green cover for human sustenance. He said afforestation drives are aimed at enhancing forest cover and mitigating the effects of climatic change. 

While participating in plantation drive,  ADC appealed to the people to extend full cooperation to the Forest department in the rehabilitation of denuded forests and called for  becoming active supporters of  plantation drives  organized under the aegis of Green JK. He said greening the planet has to become a societal initiative world over.

The DFO Social Forestry, Shama Rohi said that the department plans to plant around 2 lakh trees of various kinds this year, of which 50000 will be planted in non-forest areas to augment the green cover in the district.     

She said the department is organizing several block and village level awareness camps in order to generate mass awareness among the masses for promotion of  afforestation drives.

A plantation drive was also carried out at Dak Bangalow Khanabal. Officials of Forest Department and several members of the civil society were present on the occasion.
