India death toll rises to 75, cases shoot past 3,000

The number of COVID-19 cases in the country climbed to 3,072 on Saturday with 75 deaths, according to the Union Health Ministry.

The number of active COVID-19 cases stands at 2,784, while 212 people were either cured or discharged and one had migrated to another country, it said.

The figure includes 55 foreign nationals.

As things stand, Maharashtra has the highest number of cases at 490, with 24 deaths—also the highest in the country. Delhi follows with 445 cases and six deaths. Tamil Nadu comes next with 411 infections and two deaths.  Kerala has 295 cases with two deaths and Karnataka has 128 infections with two deaths.

Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh follow, the former with 10 deaths of 105 infections and the latter with six deaths of 104 infections.

Telangana has reported seven deaths, Punjab has reported five, West Bengal has reported three and Jammu and Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh have both reported two. Himachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar have all reported one death each.

75-year-old man dies in Karnataka; state toll reaches 4

Bengaluru: A 75-year-old man has succumbed to coronavirus in Karnataka’s Bagalkote, taking the death toll in the state to four, officials said.

The victim, who was a trader and did not have any travel history, died on Friday.

“Yes, a death has taken place,” K Rajendra, Deputy Commissioner of Bagalkote, told reporters.

He said the victim was not related to Tabligh-e-Jamaat.

Police said the victim’s children were also screened for the virus but had tested negative.

The first death due to COVID-19 in Karnataka was reported in Kalaburagi, which also happened to be the first death due to the deadly virus in the country.

The second incident was reported from Chikkaballapura and the third one happened in Tumakuru.

So far 128 people have been tested positive in the state, including the four persons who died of this viral disease, according to the officials.
