‘Grammar Writing & Dictionary Making’ workshops begin at KU

Srinagar: A series of two workshops on the themes “Grammar-Writing in the Languages of Jammu and Kashmir” and  “Dictionary Making in the Languages of Jammu and Kashmir” started here at the University of Kashmir on Monday.
The workshops are being conducted by the Department of Linguistics, the University of Kashmir, in collaboration with the Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysuru, in connection with the Scheme for the Protection and Preservation of Endangered Languages–an initiative of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.
The inaugural function was presided over by Professor Talat Ahmad, Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir.
The other dignitaries in presidium included the Professor G. Rao, Director, Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) and Professor Umarani Pappuswamy, Professor cum Deputy Director, CIIL, Professor Aejaz Mohammed Sheikh, Head, Department of Linguistics, University of Kashmir and Professor Adil Amin Kak, former head, Department of Linguistics, University of kashmir.
The book “ Reflections on the Science of Language” edited by Professor Aejaz Mohammed Sheikh and Dr. Ranjit Singh Rangila in honour of Professor A. R. Fatihi was also released on the occasion.
While delivering his Presidential remarks, the Vice Chancellor highlighted the scope of carrying out research on the endangered languages of Jammu and Kashmir.
Chief Guest on the occasion, Professor D. G. Rao, commended the Department of Linguistics, the University of Kashmir for its excellent work.
Professor Aejaz Mohammed Sheikh, Head, Department of Linguistics, University of Kashmir formally welcomed the guests.
Professor Umarani Pappuswamy spelt out the objectives of the workshop and highlighted the achievement of the projects under Scheme for Protection and Preservation of Endangered Languages (SPPEL).
Dr Javaid Aziz Bhat presented the vote of thanks while the proceedings were conducted by Dr Sheeba Hassan.
