New Delhi: The Congress today slammed the Modi government for its refusal to renew the Foreign Currency (Regulation) Act (FCRA) registration of the Missionaries of Charity and accused the Centre of targeting Christians to advance its “majoritarian agenda.”

Silence is complicity

While many in our own country are living with their heads buried in sand, the world is watching. Rahul Gandhi, Congress leader

“Mother Teresa and her Missionaries of Charity are the latest victims of the Modi government’s vicious, vengeful and hate driven agenda against minorities,” Randeep Singh Surjewala, AICC general secretary and in-charge of communications, said on Twitter.

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram said, “As 2021 ends, it gets clear that the Modi government has found another target (Christians) to advance its majoritarian agenda.”

Chidambaram asked the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to “put to use its Sherlock Holmes-like skills to quell communal violence and terrorist activity, not to suppress Christian charity and humanitarian work”.

“Nothing can be more shocking than denying future foreign contributions to the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata. This is the greatest insult to Mother Teresa who devoted her life to caring for the poor and wretched,” Chidambaram said. Citing reports of “persecution” of Christians in India in a section of the global media, party leader Rahul Gandhi said the world was watching developments in the country.

“While many in our own country are living with their heads buried in sand, the world is watching,” Rahul said on Twitter, referring to a report in The New York Times titled “Arrests, Beatings and Secret Prayers: Inside the Persecution of India’s Christians”.

“In times of injustice, silence is complicity,” he said. Surjewala accused the BJP of creating “fake bogies of communalism”. He said, “Haridwar to Calcutta, the BJP and its hate mongers are creating fake bogies of communalism. This is an affront to India’s Constitutionalism.”
