Bitter Truth

By Syed Tahir

“Iss rishwat nay kiya mujhko is qader khawar aye waqth ab main kya karoon

Rishwat say chltay hain, meray yarr, ghar aur karobbar ab Tahir kya karoon”

There is no doubt that bribery is unlawful activity, there are some scholars who considers bribery a grave major sin.

Abdullaah ibn ‘Amr, may Allah be pleased with him, who said, “The Messenger of Allah cursed both the briber and the bribed person.”

I do believe that since there was a creation of this universe, man is called a greedy, and who always thinks of himself and leaves others to wonder, nowadays bribery prevails in many sectors of numerous societies, to the extent that there is almost no area of life that is free from bribery, especially in third world countries.

Earlier on July 21, Governor Satya Pal Malik while addressing a gathering at the inaugural event of Kargil Ladakh Tourism Festival 2019 at Khree Sultan Choo Sports Stadium Kargil, opined that the biggest disease in Jammu and Kashmir is corruption.

If this is not a bitter truth that, Kashmir is suffering of corruption, then why some people at the helm of affairs got agitated or furious about his remarkable speech that the governor made.

Speaking in the context of alleged corruption among politicians and bureaucrats, Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik on July 21 asked militants to kill “those who have looted Kashmir” instead of targeting Personal Security Officers (PSOs) and Special Police Officers (SPOs) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police.

Without naming any political party, family or families he said that while people in the state lived in extreme poverty, there was no limit to the wealth of the big families who ruled the state. “They have one house in the state, another in Delhi, Dubai and London.

However Governor is the constitutional head of the state and on the very next day, S P Malik said that as a Governor he should have avoided the comment while adding that whatever he said was in a “fit of anger”.

Keeping his opinions in consideration, I believe that there is no doubt in his facts that, the biggest problem in Kashmir is corruption, we are witnessing the fact that, there are thousands of well qualified youth who are still unemployed, who wander for government jobs, they went from pillar to post in search of jobs, which actually is nothing, but for them it is something that could change their lives, that will give them a chance to earn livelihood for their families, that will keep them busy somewhere, otherwise there are chances that they could adopt wrong paths.

For God’s sake can anybody tell me that, is there any department which is corruption free in Kashmir especially, and the answer will be ‘No’.

From peon to higher authorities people are swimming in the ‘pool of corruption’ though there are some exceptional cases, there are certain people who are very honest with their jobs, with their departments, with their clients, but the corrupt official or officers don’t like their honesty, and they gets punished in different ways.

Since 1947 till date, the Government of India (GoI) has left no stone unturned in allocating the funds for the development of Jammu and Kashmir, but why cannot we ask the authorities where that money has gone, that was sanctioned or allocated by the union government, but the answer will be disappointed like no, no and a big NO.

If one thinks that Allah has bestowed his uncounted bounties upon human being, perhaps no one will go for corruption, but we have lost that mentality, we have lost the trust and belief over Allahs commands, otherwise if we could have adopted those commandments, I am very sure our society would have been free from corruption and injustice.

Today we are witnessing every type of injustice that Kashmiri’s are facing is all because of our deeds, dishonesty and nothing else, we have made corruption as a tool of miracle, but no it has become a weapon of destruction more serious than the nuclear weapons that kills a huge mass, but this corruption sows the seeds for our future generations which will be hard to digest.

Let us all take pledge that we will fight against corruption in all manners, against the ill wills that has destroyed our society, and remembers that bitter truth is hard to digest by dishonest people.
