SRINAGAR: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation Mayor Junaid Azam Mattu will have to prove his majority in the civic body here on Tuesday, even as National Conference and Congress have distanced themselves from being part of any move to unseat him.

Talking to news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Commissioner, Srinagar Municipal Corporation Gazzanfar Ali said that floor test would be held on Tuesday at Banquet hall Srinagar.

The floor test is being held after “43 councilors” submitted a no-confidence motion to unseat Mattu from coveted position in the civic body.

This is the second time in last six months that a no confidence motion has been submitted against Mattu . In December last year, he had survived a similar attempt by BJP to remove him from the position.

Interestingly, National Conference and Congress have claimed that they are not part of no-confidence motion submitted against Mattu.”JKNC has no understanding, or inclination to have an understanding with BJP. Neither in SMC Srinagar nor elsewhere,” the party said in a tweet. The Congress has also clarified that it won’t be part of any non-confidence motion by BJP.

While Congress has 16 elected corporators in the Srinagar Municipal Corporation, 11 corporators had joined NC in May 2019 after winning election as independent candidates in 2018.
