New Delhi: P Wilson, Rajya Sabha MP of DMK — an important constituent of the UPA, on Sunday said the regional parties of the country will have to come together in an alliance to defeat the BJP in 2024 General Elections.

“The regional parties have an important role in providing new direction to politics, and shape up the country’s progress with a new paradigm predicated on secularism, piety, equity and secularism,” Wilson said while speaking with reporters.

He said the opposition parties have demonstrated a good sense of floor coordination in both Houses of Parliament during the current Winter Session. More needs to be done to cement the coordination in each State across the country, he added.

Wilson is considered to be an important part of DMK’s think-tank.

Wilson critiqued the Union government with regard to the now annulled three farm laws, saying the Centre wanted to arrogate to itself the powers of the States, which was an infringement on federal structure of the country.

He appreciated the steadfast resistance to the laws by farmers of Punjab.

He said a bogey has often been created by vested interests in the name of language by pitting regional languages on the touchstone of unity and integrity of the country.

“Nothing can be more absurd and atrocious. India is a vast country with tapestry of variegated talent, rich diversity, rainbows of languages and faith, and weather, cultural practices, and umpteen subcultures, etc. Rather, different shades of everything have added vim and vitality to India as a whole.”

He suggested that the system of letting English as a link-language, and allowing regional languages to flourish has served the country fine, and must be continued.

Wilson’s pitch for strengthening of regional languages rings a bell. The Tamil Nadu-centric DMK has been an ardent champion for strengthening of Tamil language.

With regard to the assembly elections in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa due in February-March 2022, he said the BJP is on a sticky wicket.
