NEW DELHI: Delhi government extended lockdown in the national capital territory by another week.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said his government would begin easing restrictions gradually from May 31 if the number of COVID-19 cases continued to decline.

“I consulted many people and the general opinion favoured lockdown extension for one week. So, Delhi government has decided that lockdown will be extended to 5 am on May 31,” he said.

The development comes even as the national capital records a significant decline in Covid-19 infections after a devastating second wave swept up the city and crippled its healthcare system last month, drawing Delhi High Court’s ire on government authorities over the handling of the pandemic. Delhi reported 2,260 infections on Saturday and 182 deaths, and its positivity rate fell down to 3.58 per cent.

Kejriwal said his government was in talks with vaccine manufacturers to adequate supply to the national capital.
