The seedlings were distributed among progressive commercial growers of the district.

Addressing the occasion, the DDC said Kupwara has a climatic advantage during Kharif season to supply vegetables to other areas. He urged upon the concerned officers to work with added dedication and reach out rural areas so that people, especially farming communities could get benefits of the new and innovative schemes of the government, envisaged to boost the Agriculture sector in the district.

Earlier, the DDC was informed that the department has set a target of distribution of 15 lac seedlings in a phased manner at different farms of Kupwara located across the district.

He was also informed that the initiative is aimed at providing early high quality, hybrid exotic vegetable seedlings to the farming community to boost early production, enhance productivity per unit of land by double and triple cropping and achieve the goal of Doubling the farmers income, a slogan by the Prime Minister of India.

“Kupwara has a huge demand of 16 lac quintals of fresh vegetables annually, whereas as on date we are able to produce 10 lac quintals with a gap of 6.0 lac quintals of fresh vegetables to meet the demand of Kupwara people”, informed Chief Agriculture Officer, Kupwara, Nazir Ahmad Wani.

He said that the gap between demand and supply was the key principle for successful start up of any economic venture which Kupwara commercial growers have.
