DC Kulgam chairs DRSC meet

KULGAM: In order to provide safer road facilities to the people and to reduce mortality and accident rate, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kulgam, Dr.Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat today convened a meeting of District Road Safety Committee (DRSC) to discuss and formulate ‘Action Plan for Road Safety measures’ in the district.

At the outset, ARTO Kulgam informed the chair that there are approximately 8000 commercial vehicles plying in the district. He also presented current accidental figures across the country and added that about 18 deaths are occurring per hour in the country.

He also informed the meeting about the number of accidents and mortalities caused due to accidents in the district in the last 3 years.

The meeting discussed threadbare agenda points including raising awareness about Road Safety, Implementation of Ribbon Development Act, Removal of unauthorized cuts on National Highway and other major roads and regulation of Cross Junctions, Removal of Encroachments/hoardings, Traffic Management, Organization of Medical Camps and other allied issues .

Addressing the meeting, the DC instructed Ex. Engineer R&B to improve roads and identify black spots to counter hindrances.

Further, Municipal Committees were directed to remove dangerous roadside objects and hoardings alongside roads that hinder smooth traffic. They were also directed for relocation of the roadside vendors to facilitate smooth movement of pedestrians.

During the meeting, stress was laid on identifying black spots, initiating remedial measures, installation of signage and painting of roads at appropriate spots and generation of awareness for making roads safer in the district.

  The DC also directed ARTO, College Principals and CMO to jointly organize road safety sensitization programmes in colleges besides life support training sessions in colleges and other places.

CMO informed the meeting that a well equipped Trauma centre is properly functioning at Qazigund.

During the meeting the DC instructed the concerned to ensure no movement of heavy motor vehicles over the Brazulu Bridge.

The meeting among others was attended by ACR, CMO, ARTO, DIO, Principal Degree College Kulgam, Dy. SP-Hq and EOs from all Municipalities and other concerned officials.
