SRINAGAR: Intense clashes erupted as the exchange of fire stopped at the gunfight site in Mirgund on the outskirts of Srinagar on Sunday.

Reports said that youth were trying to march towards the gunfight site to help the trapped militants escape.

The forces fired tear gas to chase them away, triggering intense clashes.

Meanwhile, an official said that the exchange of fire stopped after the forces blew up the house in which a militant had taken cover.

Earlier, a police official said a militant, believed to be a foreigner was giving them tough time by changing locations.

The gunfight broke out last evening after the forces launched a cordon-and-search-operation in Mujgund following inputs about the presence of militants. Several forces’ personnel were injured in the initial exchange of fire with the militants.

Last night, news reports said that two bodies, believed to be militants, were lying at the gunfight site. However, there was no official confirmation.

“Due to poor visibility, it is not clear whether any militant has been killed,” said SSP Srinagar Imtiyaz Ismail, adding that things will be confirmed after the site is cleared.

Meanwhile, authorities have suspended mobile Internet service in Srinagar.
