SRINAGAR: A report submitted by intelligence wing of Jammu and Kashmir Police to Chief Secretary about “scam” in the garb of “Housing for All” scheme has prompted the government to order an inquiry into the matter.

The Housing and Urban Development department has ordered an inquiry into the matter on the basis of a report submitted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to J&K administration.

In an order, dated May 20, Dheeraj Gupta, Principal Secretary, H&UDD, has directed Arvind Kotwal, managing director, J&K H&UDD, to hold an in-depth enquiry regarding scam in the garb of Prime Minister’s Awas Yojana (Urban) on the basis of report submitted by Superintendent of Police (SP), CID to the Chief Secretary.

The government has directed the enquiry officer to submit the report along with the recommendations to the administrative department for further action.

When contacted, MD, Housing Board, Arvind Kotwal told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that he will soon submit a report to the government. “I will submit a report to the Principal Secretary when he will join the office,” he said.

Kotwal refused to disclose specific details about charges being probed by him. “I cannot share details because it is a confidential inquiry,” he said.

Jammu and Kashmir Housing Board is nodal agency for PMAY (Urban) in the newly carved out Union Territory.

Launched in 2015 by the central government, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) aims at affordable housing for those belonging to economically weaker sections of society and low-income groups.

The scheme has two major sections: Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) (PMAY-U) and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) PMAY-U is applicable to the urban population while PMAY-G is applicable for the rural population.
