Chairman JKPCC reviews progress of TSDF at Samba; Starts plantation drive

SAMBA: Chairman J&K Pollution Control Committee, Suresh Chugh today reviewed the progress of work of the first ever Transport, Storage and Disposal facility (TSDF) for solid and hazardous waste being built in J&K at IGC, Phase II, Samba.

The TSDF, which is first of its kind facility in J&K, is an integrated facility for the treatment and disposal of Hazardous Wastes, which is being generated by various industrial units. The facility is being constructed by a Hyderabad Construction Company M/s Ramasethu Infrastructure Pvt Ltd at an estimated cost of approximately Rs. 160 crore.

Chairman, JK PCC was accompanied by Sh. B.M. Sharma, Member Secretary, JK PCC, Dr. Syed Nadeem Hussain, Regional Director, PCC, Jammu Darshan Lal, FA/CAO, JK PCC, Agnrez Singh, DO, PCC, Samba (South) and other officials of PCC. The Project officers and other Engineers of Ramasethu Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd were also present.

Chairman, JK PCC was informed that the landscaping of the site has been completed and the work on the landfill cells is at the advance stage. It is pertinent to mention that the TSDF has been granted Consent to Establish by JK PCC and is valid upto April, 2022.

Chairman also kick started a plantation drive by planting a Kadanib tree on the site in order to stabilize the landscape as a long term measures. Appreciating the work done by the user agency, Chairman directed the said agency to expedite the construction work and complete the same within the shortest possible time as the progress on the construction of TSDF is being monitored by NGT.

Terming the construction of first ever TSDF in J&K a major achievement, the Chairman emphasized the role that the facility shall play in the safe disposal of Hazardous Waste in J&K, which at present is being sent to other states in India at high costs.

Later, Chairman, JK PCC also inspected M/s Kandhari Beveraes Pvt. Ltd at Samba and kick started plantation drive under the Environment Social Responsibility ( ESR) component of the company. He also inspected their bio labs, water testing labs, STP and bottling plants etc.

The  Chairman, JK PCC appreciated the initiative of the Private sector units like Kandhari Beverages taken towards protecting the environment by investing in the ESR component and urged other stakeholders also to participate in environment protection initiatives, so as to reduce pollution levels in the surroundings.
