Over 40,000 surgeries performed in last five years

SRINAGAR: Approximately 400 positions, including gazetted and non-gazetted roles, remain vacant at Government Medical College (GMC) Kathua.

According to information obtained by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), in the past five years, GMC Kathua has conducted over 40,000 surgeries, with approximately 1800 reported deaths. These statistics were revealed through a Right to Information (RTI) filing by RTI activist MM Shuja.

Among the 267 gazetted positions sanctioned for GMC Kathua, 154 are currently filled, leaving 113 vacant. Similarly, out of the 433 non-gazetted positions sanctioned, 206 are occupied while 227 remain unfilled.

Out of the 116 Class IV positions, 78 are filled, and 38 remain vacant. Overall, out of the total 816 sanctioned positions, 438 are occupied, and 378 are vacant.

Over the past five years, the hospital has recorded a total of 1791 deaths, with the following breakdown: 47 in 2019-20, 256 in 2020-21, 577 in 2021-22, 529 in 2022-23, and 382 in 2023-24. Notably, approximately 80% of in-patient cases were covered under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme.

Meanwhile, the hospital has performed 16,003 major surgeries over the past five years. These include 2,768 in 2019-20, 3,272 in 2020-21, 3,661 in 2021-22, 3,426 in 2022-23, and 2,876 in 2023-24.

A total of 26,150 minor surgeries were conducted during this period, with 3,714 in 2019-20, 2,491 in 2020-21, 6,139 in 2021-22, 7,844 in 2022-23, and 5,962 in 2023-24.
