RAMBAN: Twenty people were killed and 16 injured on Saturday when a minibus fell into a deep gorge on the Jammu-Srinagar highway in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir, a senior police officer said.

He said an overcrowded minibus (registration number JK19 1593) was going to Ramban from Banihal today morning when the driver lost control over it near Kela Morh near Maroof and the vehicle rolled down the 200-ft-deep gorge.

The official said that the deceased include four females. “19 dead have been identified, including the driver. The identity of one body was not known,” he said, adding that among the injured, six were being treated at district hospital Ramban while eleven others were airlifted to Jammu for specialized treatment.

Local volunteers, army and the police carried out the rescue operation. It took time for the rescuers to reach the ill-fated vehicle due to the steep slope, said an official to PTI news agency.
