Youth killed, another injured after army opens fire in Kulgam

KULGAM: A youth was killed and another injured after army opened fire in Akhran-Nowpora area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Monday.

Reports said that youth pelted an army patrol of 9 RR with stones at Akhran-Nowpora in Kulgam.

The army, they said, opened fire to disperse the protesters, resulting in injuries to two civilians.

The injured were rushed to a hospital for treatment. However, one of them succumbed on the way. The deceased was identified as Aijaz Ahmad Bhat son of Bashir Ahmad Bhat of Nowpora Akhran.

The other injured was identified as Rayees Ahmad.

An army spokesman said they fired in “self-defense” after a patrol party came under heavy stone pelting by the mob at Nowpora Akhran Kulgam.
