Chairperson DDC stresses upon community-level awareness & participation to make BBBP campaign successful

SHOPIAN: A grand Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) programme was today organised by the Social Welfare department (SWD) here at Sports Stadium Batapora Shopian.

The function was presided over by Chairperson, DDC Shopian, Bilqees Jan and Member Legislative Assembly (MLA), Shopian, Shabir Ahmed Kulley.

Additional District Development Commissioner (ADDC), Dr. Nasir Ahmed Lone; DDC members, Addl. SP, Dy. SP, Dy. LADC, DLSA, TSWO, Central Administrator, One Stop Centre for Women, District Mission Coordinator, BBBP, representatives from DLSA and officers/ officials of SWD, police, students and others participated in the event.

DDC Chairperson, in her address, stressed upon community-level awareness and participation to make the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign successful on the ground.

Speaking on the occasion, MLA underlined the need for collective social reform to eradicate gender bias and ensure equal opportunities for girls in every field.

ADDC spoke on the importance of the BBBP programme, stressing on the need to empower the girl child and ensure gender equality and sensitise society towards women’s rights and welfare.

Earlier, DSWO briefed about the objectives of the BBBP scheme and the initiatives being taken in Shopian to ensure the empowerment of the girl child through education, health and protection.

Other speakers focused on issues of women empowerment, giving women the power to stand equal to men in every field, make their own decisions and live with respect and dignity. They further said that women should also be provided equal access to quality education so that they can become self-reliant and skilled, besides spreading awareness against gender discrimination.

Representatives from DLSA highlighted the legal safeguards and rights available to women and girls under various laws and assured free legal aid to the needy. They also urged parents to encourage their daughters to pursue education and career opportunities without hesitation, eliminating gender discrimination and ensuring safety and justice.

The event concluded with a joint appeal by all dignitaries and officers for society’s wholehearted cooperation in ensuring dignity and empowerment of every girl child and to continue working with greater dedication towards the vision of BBBP.

Later, an award ceremony was held to felicitate outstanding contributors for their efforts in promoting the cause of girl child education, empowerment and gender equality.
