SRINAGAR: Life remained paralyzed across Kashmir on Monday due to a protest shutdown on the 35th death anniversary of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) founder Maqbool Butt.

All shops and other business establishments remained closed while public transport remained off the roads in summer capital Srinagar. However, private traffic plied on the city roads.

An official said thin attendance was witnessed in government offices.

A complete shutdown is being observed in Kupwara, native district of Butt who was hanged at Tihar jail in New Delhi on this day in 1984.

All the business establishments were closed and traffic was off the roads in Kupwara town with heavy deployment of forces at Butt’s native village Trehgam.

On Sunday evening, scores of people staged a candlelight protest in Trehgam to commemorate his death anniversary.

Joint Resistance Leadership comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik had called for a protest shutdown today.
