Shutdown in north Kashmir’s Sopore after local militant killed in Shopian gunfight

Shutdown is being observed in Sopore area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district against the killing of a local militant in a gunfight with the security forces in Shopian district on Friday.

Reports said that a militant, identified as Ishfaq Ahmad Sofi alias Abdullah Bhai from Model Town Sopore, was killed in a brief gunfight with the forces in Amshipora-Ramnagri village of Shopian early morning.

However, officials were yet to confirm the identity of the slain militant.

An official said that the gunfight broke out after the joint teams of the army and the state police launched a search operation in the village. “A militant was killed in the gunfight. Arms and ammunition were recovered from the gunfight site. The identity of the slain militant is being ascertained,” he said.

An eye witness said that all shops and other business establishments are closed in Sopore town while public transport is off the roads.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Baramulla has ordered the closure of all schools and colleges in Sopore sub-division.

“In view of the prevailing situation and a precautionary measure, all schools, higher secondaries and degree colleges, both private or Govt run in subdivision Sopore, shall remain closed today on May 10,” read the order.
