Anantnag: A seminar on Legal Rights of Women was held at the South Campus, University of Kashmir, on Monday.
The day-long seminar-cum-prize distribution function was organised by the Department of Management Studies to raise awareness about the legal rights of women and disseminate information on their constitutional and legal rights and entitlements.
Noted legal expert Prof Fareed Ahmad Rafiqui from the Department of Law, University of Kashmir, delivered a special lecture on the occasion.
“Access to justice can be made meaningful by making the people aware of their legal rights and entitlements,” he said, adding that “women, who are considered to be marganilised, can be best empowered by educating them about their rights and privileges”.
He said the seminar assumes great significance “as it is the best initiative to empower stakeholders and make them active participants in the administration of justice.”
In his address, Director South Campus Prof Muzaffar Ali Andrabi delineated the aims and objectives of the seminar.
“The first step to the empowerment of women is to make them aware of their rights provided to them by the Constitution, religion and society,” he said.
On the occasion, prizes were distributed amongst winners of a competition on ‘legal rights of women’, organised by the Department of Management Studies, South Campus, in collaboration with the National Commission for Women on December 20.
The programme was coordinated by Ms Natasha Saqib, Assistant Professor, Department of Management Studies.
Younis Ahmad Dar from the MBA department bagged the first position while Nabeena Jan from M.Ed stream bagged the second slot. The third position was concurrently bagged by Sajad Ahmad Parray (English); Tabassum Rashid (MBA); Faizan Nisar (Nursing); Ifra Bashir (Nursing); Rayees Ahmad Sofi (Education); Kafiya Jan (MBA) and Tabassum Beigh (MBA).
Prof Andrabi and Prof Fareedi gave away the prizes and certificates of participation.
