NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued a notice to the West Bengal Government on a petition demanding a probe by a special investigation team (SIT) into the post-poll violence that claimed several lives and forced thousands to flee the state.

Acting on a PIL filed by five social activists, including two lawyers, a Bench of Justice Vineet Saran and Justice BR Gavai asked the Mamata government to respond to the plea to provide relief and rehabilitation to those displaced due to post-poll violence, allegedly unleashed by TMC workers.

The top court also agreed to make National Human Rights Commission, National Commission for Women, National Commission for SC/ST and National Commission for Protection of Child Rights parties to the PIL after senior advocate Pinky Anand made a request to this effect. Anand said the human rights bodies should be asked to submit their reports on the violence.

Directing the TMC government to respond to the plea, the Bench posted the matter for further hearing in June.
