Srinagar: LeT (TRF) militant commander Mehran and two other ultras were killed by police in a brief shootout on Wednesday evening in Srinagar’s Rambagh area, said IGP-K Vijay Kumar.

The shootout took place in the evening at Rambagh during which police killed three militants. Among the slain militants one was identified as top commander of LeT (TRF), Mehran Yaseen Shalla, a resident of Jamalatta, Kanimazar MR Gunj, Srinagar.

As per IGP, Mehran was involved in the killing of two teachers in Srinagar besides other civilian killings in the district. He was active since 18th May of this year after going missing from his home, with a police report registered on 19-May-2021.

However, two others killed during the shootout along with Mehran were not immediately identified by officials and as per IGP, the identification of the two was being ascertained.

Following the shootout at Rambagh, the situation grew tense when the nearby residents of the area came out on the streets and resorted to sloganeering. However, on the spot security forces stemmed the disturbance inducing attempts.

The Rambagh incident came after an encounter took place in Hyderpora area of Srinagar in which three slain among four killed were claimed by their kin as innocent and refuted the statements of officials of them having any links with militants. However, in the Hyderpora encounter, a magisterial probe was ordered by LG Manoj Sinha. (KNB)
