SRINAGAR: On the eve of the Constitution Day, the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, released translated versions of the Constitution in nine Indian languages— Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Punjabi, Bodo, Kashmiri, Telugu, Odia and Assamese at Samvidhan Sadan, New Delhi.
Among these, the Constitution of India has been translated into the Kashmiri language for the first time, marking a historic moment for the region and its linguistic heritage.
The Kashmiri translation has been carried out by a team from the University of Kashmir (KU) under the Ministry of Law, Government of India, and executed through the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysore.
The project, initiated in September 2023 and completed in March 2025, was coordinated by Prof. Aejaz Mohammad Sheikh, Professor, Department of Linguistics; Head, Department of Urdu; and Dean, School of Arts, Languages & Literature.
The translation and review team included Afaq Aziz: Centre of Central Asian Studies, University of Kashmir. Basher Bashir: Shaikh-ul-Aalam Centre for Multidisciplinary Studies, University of Kashmir. Ghulam Nabi Haleem: Department of School Education, Government of Jammu & Kashmir. Iftikhar Hussain Bhat: Department of Law, University of Kashmir. Irshad Shamsi: Department of Higher Education, Government of Jammu & Kashmir. Khurshid Ahmad Mir: Department of Higher Education, Government of Jammu & Kashmir. Mir Junaid Alam: Department of Law, University of Kashmir. Mir Mubashir Altaf: Department of Law, University of Kashmir. Ratan Lal Talashi: Department of Kashmiri, University of Kashmir. Satish Vimal: All India Radio Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir.
Vice-Chancellor KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan, who keenly monitored and supported the work throughout, congratulated the team for completing this nationally significant assignment.
