NEW DELHI: Calling teachers the “true nation builders”, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday urged them to educate students about India’s diversity and attempts being made to distort and misrepresent the country’s history.

“Children should be taught about India’s diversity. They should be cautioned against the attack on the idea of India’s unity in diversity. Furthermore, your efforts to educate the future generation regarding attempts to distort and misrepresent history in the present times will go a long way in the service of the nation”, Kharge said in a message posted on his X handle on the occasion of Teachers’ Day.

Kharge also appealed to teachers to tell students about the Constitution and its Preamble, which represented the core values of the country.

Kharge said since 1962, S Radhakrishnan’s birthday was being celebrated as Teachers’ Day in the country.

Radhakrishnan wanted his birthday to be celebrated as Teachers’ Day in honour of the teachers of India, Kharge wrote.

The Congress leader, who is also Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha,  wrote  “Gurus”  as teachers were revered in our culture since ancient times because they were the true nation builders.

“They don’t just educate an individual but shape the future of a nation. They teach the path of truth, honesty, and uprightness to society. They guide and build the character of our future generations by teaching the values of patriotism, hard work, dedication, justice, and equality”, Kharge wrote.

Teachers  also instill in us the courage to face the adversities of life, Kharge added.

“I appeal to all teachers across the country to keep educating their students about the Constitution of India and its values, and the importance of the Preamble of our Constitution”, Kharge wrote.
