Demands lifting of ‘unofficial ban’ on student activism in Kashmir

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) has written a letter to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, urging him to lift unofficial ban on student activism in Kashmir.

In a statement issued to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Spokesperson of Association, Nasir Khuehami said that the University is a highest seat of learning and the active participation of students in framing various public policies forms it’s integral part.

“Our universities and colleges are the only institutions, which help us to produce young leaders, engineers, Doctors, academicians etcetera. But, due to some circumstantial changes, the institutions in Kashmir have tacitly resorted to the methods and measures which have hijacked the space for student growth and activism,” he said.

He said that student politics is a part of education and it’s where the future leaders, those who are young, honest and energetic are groomed. “Our universities and colleges in Kashmir produce doctors, lawyers, academicians, engineers in bulk, but failed to produce leaders due to the unofficial ban on student activism. The unions’ and Associations’ have many advantages and play a crucial role in forming policies of the government in different countries,” he said.

He said in modern democracies, the representation of mass in general and the youth in particular is vital, therefore it is necessary that every citizen should own a proper representation in democracy, which vitalizes the role of student unions and associations’.

Meanwhile, Khuehami urged Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to urgently look into the matter and lift an unofficial ban on student activism in Kashmir.
