Intl Women in Mathematics Day CUK’s deptt of Mathematics, WEC organize function

Srinagar: The Department of Mathematics, Central University of Kashmir (CUK) in collaboration with varsity’s Women Empowerment Committee (WEC) celebrated International Women in Mathematics Day at Nowgam Campus-I here on Tuesday.

The celebrations started with welcome address by the Dean School of Physical and Chemical Sciences, Prof. Wali Muhammad Shah. The keynote address was delivered by eminent Mathematician of the state, Prof. M.A Sofi.

In his address he highlighted the contribution of women in Mathematics.

Prof. Fozia S Qazi, Head Department of Mathematical Sciences, IUST and Dr. Roma Wani, Member, National managing body of Indian Red cross Society were the other speakers on the occasion.

Prof. Qazi gave a detailed presentation on the History of the journey of women in Mathematics. The title of her presentation was “Gender in Mathematics culture”. Dr. Roma Wani spoke on the strength of women in Mathematics.

A large number of students from the Department and Jammu and Kashmir Institute of Mathematical Sciences participated in the two symposia on the theme “Journey of women in Mathematics: from Hypatia to Mirzakhani”. The first symposium was chaired by Dr. Aftab Hussain Shah and the 2nd by Mr. Shabir Ahmad Ahanger, Assistant Professors in the Department of Mathematics.

Speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mehraj ud Din Mir congratulated the Department of Mathematics and Women Empowerment Committee for organizing the event and assured all support in future for such endeavors as well. He presented mementos to the speakers.

Dr. Anil Kumar, representing WEC, emphasized the importance of such events in the larger interests of empowerment of Women in the society.

Prof. Hamidullah Marazi Head Department of Religious Studies gave the valedictory speech on the occasion.

Vote of thanks was presented by Mr. Ghulam Mohammad Sofi coordinator, Department of Mathematics. The programme proceedings were conducted by Dr. Lubna Wali Shah, Assistant Professor Department of Mathematics.
