Human Rights Week: Mirwaiz placed under house arrest in Srinagar

SRINAGAR: Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was placed under house arrest on Monday morning to prevent him from taking part in a candlelight vigil against human rights violations in Kashmir, said a spokesman.

He said that Mirwaiz was detained today morning at his residence in Nigeen area of Srinagar.

Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik has urged people to observe human rights week from today.

The leaders have asked people to lit candles and torchlights after evening prayers during this week to highlight human rights abuses in the valley.
