Handwara gunfight: Two more forces’ personnel succumb, toll four

HANDWARA: A CRPF Inspector was among four government forces’ personnel killed while eight others including a commandant of the CRPF were injured in the gunfight at Babagund Langate area of Handwara in frontier Kupwara district on Friday.

Quoting official sources, news agency GNS reported that one of the two militants presumed dead during the gunfight in Babagund area opened fire on the search party, resulting in injuries to a CRPF inspector, a policeman and five army soldiers.

All the injured were shifted to a hospital where CRPF inspector namely Pintoo Singh of 92 BN CRPF and the policeman of SOG Handwara namely Naseer Ahmad succumbed.

A fresh gunfight began between the forces and the militant in which a CRPF commandant, one paramilitary trooper and a policeman were injured along with two more soldiers.

All the injured were evacuated to a military hospital, two of them–one CRPF man and the policeman–succumbed to their injuries.

The condition of CRPF commandant is stated to be serious, they said.

The operation was going when reports last came in. 

The encounter broke out during midnight after the joint team of army’s 22 RR, 92 Battalion CRPF and SOG launched a cordon-and-search operation at Khanan Babagund in Langate.
