Srinagar: One day workshop on ‘Fake news detection’ was conducted here Monday at Media Education and Research Centre (MERC), KU under the ‘Google News Initiative Trainers Network’.
The workshop was conducted by a Google-certified Trainer of the Google News Initiative (GNI), Faisul Yaseen.
The workshop was conducted in order to sensitize the students about the tools available to detect fake news.
“In the era of Facebook delivery of news, and in competing speeds, it becomes mandatory for journalists to keep the tools handy in order to tell fake news from real news,” he said.
The Media Education Research Centre faculty members were present on the occasion who shared their view on fake news propagation.
Coordinator of the department Faruq Masudi threw the workshop open and thanked Yaseen, a MERC alumnus for conducting the workshop.
Interacting with the participants, Yaseen said, “Today’s journalists need to work harder than those who spread fake news.  Fake news sharers have no accountability while journalists have to be responsible.”
A practical session was held in the computer laboratory of the department after the presentation session.
The students learned to detect fake images and videos in the process.
A brief question-answer session was held after the practical session and students were briefed about the digital safety and data hygiene.
The workshop was conducted as part of the Vice Chancellor, Prof Talat Ahmad ’s initiative for dynamic pedagogy.
