Int’l Girl Child Day: Series of awareness events on gender equality held in Kathua

KATHUA: A series of events were today organised here to generate awareness on gender equality and to offer opportunities to girls and young women in connection with International Day of Girl Child.

Events were held in different administrative units of Kathua where massive participation of different age group of girls besides parents of newly born girl child also participated.

The theme of this year’s International Girl Child Day is “My Voice, Our Equal future”

District Development Commissioner, O.P Bhagat,  deliberated on various measures being taken by the district administration to educate people about the essence of maintaining sex ratio. He said all means are being utilised to disseminate the message for protection of girl child.

Department of ICDS Kathua organised activities like Poem Recitation, Celebration of the Birthday of Girl Child, Plantation, Fancy Dress competition, Nukad Nataks, Singing of Songs, Painting Competition, Distribution of Ladli Beti Passbooks, Writing of slogans, Pledge etc in different Anganwadi Centres of District Kathua.

The district unit of Nehru Yuva Kendra celebrated International Day of girl Child at various Youth clubs under Beti Bachao Beti Padao theme. Awareness and women empowerment programs like sangosthi symposium, debate, culture and discussions on stable sex ratio were held to mark the day.

Social Welfare department also marked the day with unique concept of distributing Cotton bags among the people in main town area. “The cotton bags prepared by the inmates of Nari Niketan Kathua was aimed to aware people to adopt biodegradable products and discourage polythene bags”, the DSWO informed.

Debates, games and recreational activities were organised in different schools across 12 zones of district Kathua by department of Youth Services and Sports to mark the International Day of Girl Child.

Tree plantation drives were also carried out across the district.

PRI members, line departments, staff of ICDS Department and people in a large number participated in the celebrations.
