SHOPIAN: Residents of scores of villages in Zainapora subdivision of south Kashmir’s Shopian district are grappling with acute water shortage as all the water pump sheds in the area are non-functional from past many days.

Scores of villages, including  Zainapora, Wachi, Reshipora, Herman, Bapora, and Manihal have been reeling under acute shortage of water for past 10 days as the water pump sheds are not being operated due to a shortage of fuel and electricity.

“We approached the concerned PHE department, but they said they have no fuel to run the pump sheds,” said Nazir Ahmad, a resident of Zainapora.

Many residents complained that they were forced to traverse long distances in the frosty weather conditions to fetch water.

Chief Engineer PHE ( Mechanical Division) said that many schemes were disrupted at various places due to the breakdown of electricity.

“We have restored almost all of them and are making fuel available to the areas from where we receive complaints” he said.
