SRINAGAR: Authorities on Friday barred the worshipers from offering the mandatory congregational Friday prayers at the historic Jamia Masjid in Downtown Srinagar.

Reports said that restrictions were put in place around the Nowhatta area and all the roads leading to the historic mosque were also sealed.

Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq who addresses the faithful at the mosque every Friday denounced the lockdown.

“Strongly denounce lock down of #JamaMasjid and imposition of restrictions in downtown Srinagar as today being Friday following Mehraj special dua majlis was to be held. Its unacceptable that every other Friday Jamia is forcibly locked, prayers barred and I am put under #HouseArrest (sic),” Mirwaiz said in a tweet.

Mirwaiz was placed under house arrest today morning soon after reports of clashes inside Srinagar’s central jail started circulating.

Authorities also suspended the mobile Internet service in the district.
