CHANDIGARH: On the first day of 2026, light rain was witnessed by residents of Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali, as predicted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The IMD had predicted scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall or snowfall across the Western Himalayan region from December 30 to January 2. It had also predicted dense to very dense fog on January 1 across many regions — including Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and East Uttar Pradesh.

Dr Naresh Kumar, IMD scientis, told PTI that there was currently an active western disturbance positioned over North Pakistan. Due to its effect, light to moderate rainfall and snowfall in the Western Himalayan region was expected over the next two to three days, he added.

He said in Punjab, Haryana, and North Rajasthan, there may be some light rainfall at various places. He said NCR Delhi could see very light to light rainfall activity on the first day of 2026.
