Data Science and Information Security-boot camp workshop concluded at IUST

Awantipora: A five-day workshop titled Data Science and Information Security-bootcamp concluded on Saturday 15 June 2019 in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IUST. The workshop was jointly organized by the departments of CSE and ECE, IUST in collaboration with MAKAUT, West Bengal under TEQIP-III. The inaugural session took place in TEQIP auditorium with Vice Chancellor Central University Kashmir Prof. Me’raj Ud Din Mir as the Chief Guest and Vice Chancellor IUST Prof. Mushtaq A Siddiqi as the guest of honor. Deans of the various schools along with the heads of the departments and other university officials were also present in the inaugural ceremony.

HoD CSE Dr. Assif Assad, welcomed the dignitaries and apprised the audience about the importance of the workshop in the backdrop of the challenges brought forward by the invention of Internet via-a-vis handling of large amounts of data and information security. Dean SOE&T Prof. A.H Moon highlighted the achievements of the University in the last few years and shared some ideas to further take the University towards the path of excellence. Dean Academic Affairs Prof. A. M Shah stressed upon collaborative learning and research as an important factor for the education sector to prosper. Vice Chancellor IUST Prof Mushtaq A Siddiqi highlighted various security related problems and urged the researchers to work towards building reliable solutions to prevent the misuse of technology. Vice Chancellor CUK Prof. Me’raj Ud Din alerted the audience about some of the ethical implications of AI and the dangers of AI in controlling the humanity rather than humans controlling it.

During the course of five days, speakers from various reputed institutes including IIT Roorkee, IIT Mandi, IIT Jammu, NIT Goa, JMI Delhi and MAKAUT West Bengal held technical sessions on a breadth of topics related to Data Science and Information Security like Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Cryptography, Mobile Crowd Sensing etc. A particular highlight of the workshop was that hands-on sessions were also held by Dr. Adiya and his PhD scholar from IIT Mandi and Mr. Rayees Ahmad Dar from the department of CSE, IUST to give participants a practical glimpse of the topics covered.

The valedictory session was held on Saturday, June 15, 2019 and was chaired by Dean SoE&T Prof. A. H Moon in presence of Finance Officer, IUST Mr. Sameer Wazir. During the session Prof. Moon stressed upon increasing the collaboration in terms of conduction of workshops and scholar exchange to bolster the research between IUST and MAKAUT. Mementos and certificates were distributed among the participants and the organizing team and the session concluded with a vote of thanks presented by Mr. Sajaad Ahmad Lone, Assistant Professor, IUST.
