CUK’s Maths deptt celebrates National Mathematics day

Srinagar: The Department of Mathematics, Central University of Kashmir (CUK) celebrated National Mathematics day.

The day marks the birth anniversary of the great Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. The celebration started with the welcome address by the Department Coordinator, Dr. Aftab Hussain Shah, who highlighted the importance of the day.

Faculty member, Mr. Nitin Ambadas Katake gave a detailed presentation on the life and work of Srinivasa Ramanujan and lauded his contribution in the field of Mathematics.

Mr. Shahbaaz Hakbari, Vice-Chairman Jammu and Kashmir Mathematics Club and a known mathematician highlighted the “shortcomings” in the teaching of Mathematics at the School level in J&K.

The students of the Department also presented their talks on various topics ranging from the History of Mathematics to the innate beauty of the subject.

Prof. M. H. Gulzar and Prof. Bashir Ahmad Zargar of the Kashmir Mathematical Society spoke about the need to develop Mathematics culture in the society.

Prof. Abdul, Department of Mathematics NIT Srinagar lauded the Department of Mathematics, for organizing the event.

J&K Mathematics Club later felicitated four eminent persons of the State including, Prof. Wali Mohammad Shah of CUK, for their contribution in the field of Mathematics and presented mementoes to them. 

Speaking on the occasion, Dean, School of Physical and Chemical Sciences, Prof. Wali Mohammad Shah asked all the concerned to join hands with the organizers of such programmes in order to develop a mathematics culture in the State. He informed the participants that CUK will celebrate this day every year and prizes will be distributed to those who will secure positions during the competitive events. He also informed the gathering that best teacher / Researcher in mathematics award to be given on the same day every year.
