SRINAGAR: The Centre has advised the administration of Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir to furnish details of items which require geographical indications registration under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act of 1999.

In a communique to administrative secretaries, J&K’s Industries & Commerce department has written to the departments to furnish details of items which require Geographical Indications registration for sharing it with the Centre.

“…it is enjoined upon all the Administrative Secretaries to furnish details of items which require Geographical Indications registration with Industries and Commerce Department, so that same is shared with the Ministry of commerce and Industry, Government of India,” reads the communique, a copy of which is in possession of news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO).

The GI is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. These GI sign is used for agricultural products, food stuffs, handicrafts and industrial Products.

As a part of the efforts to protect the local goods known for their qualities and reputation, nine items from Jammu and Kashmir have Geographical Indications registration.

The products that have got GI tag are Kashmiri Pashmina, Kashmiri Sozani Craft, Kani Shawl, Kashmir Paper Machie, Kashmiri Walnut Carving, Khatamband, Kashmiri Hand Knotted Carpet, Kashmir saffron.
