Police-officer-turned politician resigns from party

SRINAGAR: In another setback for Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) in the newly carved out Union Territory of Ladakh, a cop -turned-politician Tsering Gyalpo on Tuesday resigned from the party.

The resignation of Gyalpo comes two days after BJP’s Ladakh UT president and former minister in PDP-BJP government Chering Dorjay resigned from membership of the party.

Gyalpo, a former Superintendent of Police, had joined the party in presence of its President J.P. Nadda in New Delhi days after Parliament approved creation of separate Union Territory for Ladakh region spread over two districts of Leh and Kargil.

Dorjay had resigned from the party, citing UT administration’s “failure in evacuating passengers stranded at different places throughout India.”

In his letter to the BJP national president, Dorjay had also accused the UT administration of rendering Hill Councils ineffective. “The UT administration has rendered autonomous Hill Councils of Leh and Kargil districts completely ineffective by not allowing them to function as per the council Act,” said Dorjay in his letter, a copy of which lies with news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO). All the BJP councillors of Leh Autonomous Hill Council also protested outside the Lieutenant Governor’s office in Leh over the plight of the stranded people.

Former MLA from Kargil Asgar Karbalie said the people of Leh have now realized that division of Jammu and Kashmir was a wrong and illogical move. “The Government of India should re-unify Ladakh region with Jammu & Kashmir,” he demanded.
