Calls for strengthened environmental safeguards
SRINAGAR: Commissioner Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), Faz Lul Haseeb, today conducted a comprehensive inspection of the Achan Dumping Facility to assess ongoing solid waste management operations and ensure strict adherence to scientific processing and disposal standards.
During the visit, the Commissioner undertook a detailed review of the entire waste management chain, from source-level segregation and material recovery to mechanical processing, engineered landfill operations, and environmental compliance mechanisms. He examined the functioning of leachate management systems, landfill engineering practices, environmental monitoring protocols, and the progress achieved under legacy waste bio-remediation and phased site reclamation initiatives.
Emphasizing full compliance with the Solid Waste Management Rules and established environmental norms, the Commissioner directed officials to strengthen scientific waste processing through systematic segregation, resource recovery, bio-processing, and controlled landfill management. He underscored the importance of strict environmental safeguards, efficient utilization of machinery, real-time data-driven monitoring, and continuous operational upgrades to minimize ecological impact and safeguard public health.
Reaffirming SMC’s commitment to transforming waste management infrastructure in Srinagar, the Commissioner stated that targeted and time-bound interventions will be undertaken to enhance processing capacity, modernize infrastructure, and ensure environmentally compliant disposal practices at the Achan facility. He stressed that sustainable and technology-driven waste management remains a core priority for the Corporation.
Senior officers and officials of the concerned departments accompanied the Commissioner during the inspection.
