NEW DELHI: A message from a social media user that tagged Delhi Police turned out to be a lifesaving move for a distraught teenager who was planning to jump in front of a moving train after his love story took an unexpected turn, an official said on Thursday.
It all began with a post on X by a user at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, which alerted the cops about a person known to him whom he had been chatting on social media and who was planning to die by suicide due to emotional distress.
The person in question intended to end his life by jumping in front of a train, possibly at the New Delhi railway station. The message also included the name and mobile number of the distressed individual, a police official said.
Taking immediate cognisance of the alert, on-duty SMCR team, comprising Sub-Inspector Kiran, Sub-Inspector Jai Kishan, Head Constable Gargi and Constable Prashant verified the details and passed the information to the Station House Officer (SHO) of the New Delhi railway station for urgent intervention, the official added.
During further coordination and verification, it was established that the youth was not at New Delhi railway station but had gone to Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station and the same was updated to the SHO there, the officer said.
Acting swiftly on the inputs, SHO Inspector Shambhu Nath, along with his staff, reached the station and successfully traced and rescued the youth, averting a possible suicide.
The police said the young man was counselled after the rescue and later handed over safely to his uncle, a resident of Jaitpur in Delhi.
