NEW DELHI: Two wanted criminals were injured in a police encounter in the Narela area of outer north Delhi, officials said on Thursday.
The injured has been identified as Afzal alias Imran (34), and Chandan alias Kaku (31), both are listed as “bad characters” (BCs) of Police station Narela.
According to police, a team from Police Station Narela received specific intelligence that a wanted accused was roaming in the area on a motorcycle and was armed.
Acting on the tip-off, the police team launched a search operation and deployed a special picket near the NIT area.
During checking at the backside of MIT Road, Narela, two men riding a motorcycle were signalled to stop. Instead of complying, the suspects attempted to flee, an official said.
The cop added that during the chase, the accused fired three rounds at the police party.
In self-defence, the police team also retaliated and fired three rounds out of which one bullet each hit the leg of both the accused.
During a search of the spot, police recovered two pistols, two mobile phones and the motorcycle used by the accused.
Five empty cartridges were also seized from the scene.
Chandan is allegedly involved in multiple criminal cases, including attempt to murder, offences under the Arms Act, robbery and theft while Afzal is also accused in several cases involving assault on a public servant, robbery, Arms Act violations, eve-teasing-cum-POCSO offences and theft.
Both injured accused were initially admitted to Rao Harish Chandra (RHC) Hospital and later referred to Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial (BSA) Hospital for further treatment.
Police said a fresh case is being registered against the accused and a further investigation and necessary legal action are underway.
